Principal Technical Lead – Carbon
Future Leap (certified B-Corp), was created to support organisations to accelerate their sustainability journey and progress towards net zero. We do this by showcasing innovative solutions, facilitating future-thinking discussions and collaborating with one another. We aim to be the primary source of sustainability related services and information for commercial clients in the Southwest and beyond.
Future Leap is a Bristol based organisation which offers organisations a number of hands-on services to support their net zero journeys. Additionally, Future Leap runs one of the biggest sustainability business networks in the UK consisting of over 300 members who engage with each other through our online portal and events programme on all areas of sustainability from the very deep green technologies to softer solutions. We are looking for a highly experienced person who is knowledgeable in the frameworks and regulatory landscape surrounding net zero, the successful candidate will be responsible for leading technical delivery of our sustainability consultancy, developing the scale and scope of both our service offering and client base.
We aim to build long-term and lasting relationships with our clients and therefore an ability to liaise effectively with stakeholders at all levels and be a trusted source of advice is paramount. Reporting to the Head of Consultancy, this varied role will require working independently as well as collaborating with external delivery partners and other Future Leap departments.
The remit of this role will be to lead on the development and delivery of net zero consultancy projects for our clients, covering the measurement, management and reduction of carbon.
The successful candidate will be experienced in the delivery of complex strategic projects, ideally for large organisations. You will be well versed in helping complex businesses to develop their climate strategies, gather and analyse data, model potential reductions, and set up processes and systems to continually improve performance.
Key responsibilities:
- Leading on the end-to-end client engagement and project delivery including establishing the structure, strategy and approach.
- With an understanding of client’s overall strategy and decarbonisation opportunities help clients to set ambitious yet achievable short and long-term net zero targets.
- Lead on bid development, both internally, and as part of consortiums including quote and bid development.
- Communicate the business case for investment in climate-positive interventions.
- Conduct business assessments and site audits to highlight opportunities for emissions reduction and build these into carbon reduction plans and net zero transition plans.
- Lead on the analysis of complex emission data covering scopes 1, 2 and 3.
- Engage in business development activities where required and ensure that customer relationships are managed for maximum value to both the client and for Future Leap.
- Contribute to marketing campaigns, providing thought leadership and promoting Future leap’s services at internal and external events
- Provide coaching and mentorship to Future Leap’s team of consultants
- Responsible for the allocation of consultant resource effectively to support project delivery.
Required Skills and Experience
- Undergraduate or postgraduate qualification in a relevant field such as engineering, energy, construction, surveying, environmental management, environmental science, sustainability, or business operations.
- Experience in delivering complex strategic projects from bid to completion either as part of an in-house team or working for a large multi-disciplinary consultancy.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement with senior leaders, technical experts for large organisations whilst engaging with senior technical, managerial stakeholders clients, associate consultants (delivery partners) and Future Leap team members.
- Robust knowledge of decarbonisation work and initiatives which enables you to provide leadership in solving clients’ issues through project delivery.
- Solid understanding of business operations with the ability to advise clients and explain the benefits of strategic action on sustainability in clear and concise terms.
- Knowledge and experience of carbon accounting and net-zero regulation and frameworks from both a mandatory and voluntary perspective (SBTi, PAS2060, PAS 2080, SECR, ESOS, TCFD, ESRS etc)
- Understand carbon reporting frameworks (GHG protocol, SBTi, ISO) and have first-hand experience of guiding organisations through the requirements of both mandatory and voluntary reporting.
- Demonstrable experience of success in contributing to and winning bids supported by knowledge of the bid management processes.
- Proven experience of project management with a focus on managing risk, resource allocation and project delivery (on time and on budget).
- Highly proficient with Microsoft Office, especially Excel, and experience with carbon calculators and accounting platforms
- Highly numerate with an ability to analyse large datasets.
- A strong communicator, both written and verbal.
- Adept at writing reports and presenting complex information in an accessible and organised manner.
- Interest and passion for sustainability and environmental issues.
Desirable
- Knowledge and experience of reporting on broader sustainability and ESG concerns including biodiversity, water use, supply chain considerations and social sustainability.
- Experience of implementing or managing environmental management solutions such as ISO 14001
- Knowledge of energy assessments and low-carbon technology option evaluation and feasibility, modelling the potential impact of interventions on both cost and carbon

They will be primarily based at our sustainable business hub in Clifton, however flexible and hybrid working patterns are available. Salary:
£35-42k depending on experience
