Big adventures: learning from 136mile running attempt for the River Wye

6th November 2024 | 7pm | Online

Highs & lows from the 136 mile FKT attempt; lessons learned; & applying the adventurer mindset to the next big adventure & ordinary life.

Join us to hear the highs and lows of Mark from Big Adventures on Average Talent’s latest Adventure: attempting to beat the current Fastest Known Time to run the 136 mile Wye Valley Walk. The current record is just over 46 hours and Mark hopes to do it in 32 hours over 12th-13th October! At the time of putting this eventbrite up we don’t know if he’ll make it…

This webinar on November 6th is raising money to support the River Wye campaign. PLEASE DONATE HERE.

Rescuing a dying river

This webinar is raising money for the Friends of the River Wye to equip, train and support Citizen Scientists who monitor the conditions of the River Wye in order to push action for its restoration. Despite its designation as a Special Area of Conservation, the River Wye is facing environmental collapse. It has experienced devastating phenomena such as mass fish deaths and a loss of biodiversity due to suffocation from algal blooms; phosphate well beyond safe levels in many areas; and its first designated bathing area in Wales (an area that has long-been used as a popular swimming spot) was issued an advisory against swimming within a month of opening due to bacteria levels at 5 – 7 times safe levels for bathing.

The ticket is free but please register in advance to receive joining details, and we request that you visit Mark’s fundraising page to make a donation to the Friends of the Wye if you are able. We also encourage you to support the River Wye with action, and you can start by making a pledge.

Take a look at the Wye Manifesto for more about the challenges and hopes for the River Wye.

What will we cover?

In our previous webinar in September (before the actual FKT attempt of 12th-13th October) we heard that whatever happens out there on the trail, whether he hits this ambitious target or not, Mark will be channelling his experience as an adventurer, and having the experience of a lifetime – good and bad.

We also heard how his approach to taking on big challenges and having the resilience to ride the ups and downs, matches up to the psychology and physiology research, as well as what we hear from changemakers and adventurers.

You can access the full recording of the first webinar and catch a few of the take-aways in this blog post: ‘5 ways to find ease & resilience in the big challenges’
https://www.christinatransformationalcoaching.co.uk/blog/5-ways-to-find-ease-in-the-big-challenges-and-the-ups-and-downs-they-inevitably-bring

This time:

  • What happened out there on the trail? What were the ups and downs and how did Mark manage them? What went to plan and what went out of the window?
  • Did he achieve his A, B, C, D or E goals?
  • What will he take with him from this adventure to help him ride the ups and downs of ordinary life and take on that next big challenge?
  • And what about you: what will you take with you from this webinar to help you with your own challenges and the adventure that is everyday life? What will be your next big challenge?

Once again, we’ll be weaving in insights from psychology research and conversations with changemakers and adventurers too.

This is an online webinar – you will get the zoom link through eventbrite and an email from Christina closer to the time. If you don’t have the zoom link or have any questions, get in touch with Christina on christina.transformational@gmail.com

Mark Gillett, Big Adventures on Average Talent

Mark is a teacher, father and average runner. He has a habit of taking on big adventurous challenges which he probably wasn’t ready for – such as becoming the joint-first person to ever complete the Everesting challenge by running in Thailand, before ever running an ‘ordinary’ marathon. This habit of taking on huge challenges has led Mark to becoming an experienced ultra and adventure runner and then taking on even bigger challenges (such as this one!). In his (limited) spare time Mark is a running coach with the Chepstow Harriers running club. He can be found on Instagram and YouTube as BigAdventuresOnAverageTalent.
