About the Job 

Map Impact is searching for an Environmental Statistician to connect the dots between satellite derived indicators of the status of the environment and what is taking place on the ground. This is a very important role to analyse and translate the outcomes from satellite information, and correlate with an ecologist’s findings to determine change and reason for change. It is also a fundamental role in considering how Map Impact continues to evolve our products and services. We are looking for a keen self-starter who can objectively identify patterns in data, and portray results in a statistical manner to a range of internal and external stakeholders.  

Responsibilities 

  • The link between Map Impact’s production team and observations in the field, to establish a connection between satellite data and the environment 
  • Data processing, analysis and reporting with a primary focus on environmental data 
  • Articulate and justify Map Impact’s methodologies to internal and external stakeholders. Soliciting feedback and implementing change where appropriate 
  • Horizon scanning to ensure our approach remains aligned with legislation and customer requirements 
  • Provide recommendations for the improvement of Map Impact’s products and services 
  • Quality control, with key involvement in testing and inspection of Map Impact’s products and services 
  • Supporting proposals and opportunities with technical rationale and content 
  • Participating in fieldwork, when required 
  • Regular engagement and progress reporting to management level 
Required Qualifications and Experience Essential Desirable 
BSc / MSc in Environmental Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering or Data Analytics/Science or related discipline ✓  
Analyse and interpret data with strong analytical and strategic skills, forensic attention to detail and critical thinking skills ✓  
Identify trends and understand seasonal variation to detect and correct anomalies ✓  
Ability to manage and influence various internal and external stakeholders to ensure the solution is robust and credible ✓  
Understanding of satellite derived indices and how they can be applied to ecological mapping  ✓ 
Strong programming skills (e.g. R, Python or equivalent) to undertake statistical data analyses  ✓
